Synthetic Turf Installation

Shoreline Synthetic Turf are professional landscapers who install synthetic turf regularly for valued customers. We are more than happy to measure, quote and then install your turf for you, but if you would prefer to purchase just the synthetic grass and install it yourself, then here are some easy to follow instructions from the professionals!

STEP 1: Prep area for synthetic turf installation.

First step is to dig out the area where you plan to add the synthetic turf. Dig it down a minimum of 80mm to allow for a base of crusher dust of 50mm and the height of the grass itself. We usually use our small dingo digger that can fit into small access spaces of 1 metre wide. All the dug our material will need to be removed or re-purposed somewhere else if possible.

STEP 2: Add 50mm crusher dust base and compact fully.

Crusher dust to a thickness of 50mm needs to be added to your cut out area and then screeded and compacted fully with a plate compactor which you can hire if needed. Screed one final time and completely wet with water from a hose to bind the crusher dust. Compact again if necessary.

STEP 3: Lay out, pin and join (if necessary) turf.

Roll out your synthetic turf and cut to the size of the area required. Cut neatly with a sharp Stanley knife, especially around obstacles or features. If the area requires joining multiple turf pieces then use specific synthetic turf joining tape for the job, as it will hold the joins properly over time. Once you have your turf laid out in position, use 150mm turf nails to pin the turf in place securely around the perimeter of your turf at approximately 500mm intervals.

STEP 4: Remove waste and top turf with fine sand

Remove all off-cuts of synthetic turf and make sure none has been left under any areas of the turf rolls. Now cover and brush in a layer of fine sand (approximately 15-20mm deep) to weigh down your new synthetic grass area. This is especially true for high traffic areas and extra sand can be added if necessary. The brushing will also straighten your grass blades that may have been folded during storage / transit.

Important Reminders.

  • Avoid lifting the grass by yourself as it is heavy; instead, cut the rolls into manageable lengths before moving them.
  • Ensure all grass is laid in the same direction.
